Exterior Painting in Fords, NJ
Exterior Painting in Fords, NJ
Fords is one of those Woodbridge Township neighborhoods where the houses tell you exactly when they were built. Cottages from the 1940s and 1950s line the streets near New Brunswick Avenue. Bi-levels from the 1960s and 1970s fill in the blocks closer to King Georges Post Road. And scattered throughout, you will find larger Colonials that were either built new or remodeled in the last fifteen years.
Each era brought different siding materials and different exterior challenges. Red Trim Painting has been working on homes across Fords and greater Woodbridge Township for over 10 years. We know what these houses need because we have already painted dozens of them.
What We See on Fords Homes
Most of the older Fords homes were built with wood clapboard siding, and a lot of them were later covered with aluminum siding in the 1970s and 1980s. That aluminum held up well for a while, but after 40 or 50 years it chalks, oxidizes, and fades to a color that does not match anything anymore. The wood trim underneath is often still there, and when the aluminum seams open up, moisture gets behind it and the wood starts rotting without anyone noticing.
The mid-century bi-levels have their own issues. Flat fascia boards and shallow roof overhangs mean rain runs straight down the face of the house. Peeling paint on the fascia and soffit is one of the most common problems we see on Fords bi-levels. Add in the road grime from being between the Turnpike and Route 1, and exteriors here get dirtier faster than homes in quieter areas.
On the newer Colonials and renovated homes, vinyl siding is more common. Vinyl does not peel, but it does fade and stain. A good cleaning and a coat of vinyl-safe paint can make those homes look brand new again without the cost of full siding replacement.
Our Exterior Painting Process
We follow the same process on every Fords home, whether it is a 1950s cottage on Mary Avenue or a renovated Colonial near Fords Park.
First, we inspect. We check every surface, every joint, every piece of trim. We are looking for rot, cracking caulk, peeling paint, and areas where moisture might be getting in. You get a written scope of work before we touch anything.
Next comes prep work. On older Fords homes, this is where most of the labor goes. We scrape all loose paint, sand rough edges, replace any rotted wood, and prime bare surfaces. If the aluminum siding has heavy oxidation, we wash it with a solution that removes the chalk and gives the paint something to grip.
Then we prime and paint. We use quality acrylic latex on most surfaces because it handles New Jersey’s freeze-thaw cycles better than anything else. For bare wood and repaired spots, we start with an oil-based primer to seal the grain before the topcoat goes on. Two coats on trim, two coats on siding. No shortcuts.
Services We Provide in Fords
Our crew handles the full range of residential exterior painting work in Fords:
Full exterior repaints for homes that need a complete refresh from foundation to roofline. Wood trim and fascia painting for the original wood details that give older Fords homes their character. Deck and porch painting for the back decks and front porches that take a beating from New Jersey weather. Exterior metal painting for railings, wrought iron fences, and metal awnings that are common on Fords bi-levels. Second-story work for the taller Colonials and split-levels where safe ladder and scaffolding setup matters. And we work with HOA and condo associations in Woodbridge Township communities that have exterior painting requirements.
A Recent Fords Project
Split-level on a side street off Ford Avenue, built in 1968. Original wood siding on the upper level, aluminum siding on the lower level. The homeowner had not painted in over 15 years. The wood siding was cracking and peeling badly on the south side, and the aluminum had turned a chalky gray that looked nothing like its original tan color.
We replaced two sections of rotted wood siding on the upper level and scraped the rest down to solid paint. Washed the aluminum siding to remove the oxidation layer. Applied oil-based primer to all bare wood, then two coats of acrylic latex across the entire exterior. Painted the front door, shutters, and all the window trim in a contrasting color the homeowner picked out. Five days start to finish.
