Exterior Painting in Metuchen, NJ
Metuchen is less than three square miles, but the homes here cover a lot of ground when it comes to age and materials. Walk down any street near the train station and you will pass Victorian-era houses with original wood clapboard right next to early 1900s colonials clad in cedar shakes. A few blocks out, the housing shifts to mid-century ranches and Cape Cods with vinyl or aluminum siding. Every decade of the last 130 years is represented somewhere in this borough.
Red Trim Painting handles residential exterior painting throughout Metuchen, from the historic homes along Main Street to the neighborhoods off Middlesex Avenue and the developments closer to Route 27. We know these homes because we have been painting them for over a decade. A Victorian with decorative wood trim needs a completely different approach than a 1950s ranch with aluminum siding, and we plan every job based on what the house actually requires.
What We See on Metuchen Homes
Metuchen sits in Middlesex County with the same hot, humid summers and freeze-thaw winters that wear down exterior surfaces across central New Jersey. What makes this borough different is the age and variety of the housing stock.
The older homes near downtown and in the Woodwild Park area still have original wood siding, whether that is clapboard, cedar shakes, or decorative shingle patterns on gable ends. Wood holds paint well when it is maintained, but decades of moisture cycling take a toll. We see grain separation on fascia boards, peeling paint on window casings, and caulk failure at every joint where wood meets wood or wood meets trim. On north-facing walls where the mature tree canopy blocks direct sun, the surface stays damp long enough for mildew to take hold and work its way under the paint film.
Cedar shake siding on the early 1900s colonials presents its own set of problems. Shakes expand and contract with moisture, and paint that is not flexible enough will crack and flake within a few years. We also see tannin bleed on cedar that was not properly primed, leaving brown stains that bleed through the topcoat no matter how many times you repaint over it.
The mid-century ranches and Cape Cods further from downtown tend to have aluminum or vinyl siding. Aluminum oxidizes and chalks the same way it does everywhere in Middlesex County. Vinyl holds up longer but fades and becomes brittle after 20 to 25 years, especially on south-facing elevations that take full sun all afternoon.
Our Exterior Painting Process
Every project starts with a full perimeter walk. In Metuchen, that assessment is especially important because you can find three different siding materials on the same house. A 1920s colonial might have wood clapboard on the first floor, cedar shakes on the gable, and aluminum soffits that were added in the 1970s. Each surface gets its own prep plan.
Prep work drives the timeline on most Metuchen jobs. For wood clapboard and trim, we scrape all loose paint to a solid edge, sand the profile, and prime bare wood with a substrate-matched exterior primer. Cedar shakes get a tannin-blocking primer to prevent bleed-through. Aluminum surfaces with chalking get an oxidation wash and bonding primer before topcoat.
Once every surface is prepped and primed, we apply two coats of premium acrylic latex across all siding surfaces. Acrylic latex is the right choice for this area because it flexes with temperature swings and breathes well enough to release trapped moisture. A Recent Metuchen Project
A 1920s colonial a few blocks from Main Street had wood clapboard siding on the first floor and cedar shake shingles on the upper gable ends. The south-facing clapboard had paint peeling in sheets where moisture had worked behind the film over multiple winters. The cedar shakes on the gable had been painted years ago without a tannin-blocking primer, and brown bleed-through stains were visible through the faded topcoat. Our crew scraped the clapboard back to a solid edge, sanded every board, and primed with an exterior acrylic primer. The shakes got a full coat of tannin-blocking primer before we touched them with color. All window and door casing caulk was pulled and replaced with elastomeric sealant. Two coats of acrylic latex on everything. Five days for a home that had not had proper exterior work in close to 15 years.
