Interior Painting in Fords, NJ

Most of the homes in Fords were built before anyone worried about whether the paint would hold up fifty years later. And now, fifty years later, here we are. Red Trim Painting works with homeowners across the Fords section of Woodbridge Township, from Lafayette Estates to the Ford Avenue corridor to the blocks off King Georges Post Road. The housing stock is mostly Cape Cods, ranches, and bi-levels that went up between the 1940s and 1960s, sitting on tight lots with interiors that show every decade of wear. Plaster walls carrying four or five coats of paint. Wallpaper somebody painted over in the 1980s. Trim that started out white and turned yellow next to every heat register in the house. We see all of it in Fords, and we know how to deal with every bit of it.

What We See Inside Fords Homes

The median home in Fords was built around 1957. That puts most of the housing stock right in the middle of the post-war building boom, and the interiors reflect it.

First floors are usually plaster. Solid, but full of hairline cracks at corners and around door casings where the house has settled and flexed over the decades. Upper levels and additions tend to be early drywall with taped joints that have cracked from settling. The Cape Cods along Ford Avenue have those sloped knee walls on the second floor where the ceiling follows the roofline. Low clearance, weird angles, and paint that flakes if nobody bothered to prime the surface properly the first time around.

Trim is oil-based in almost every home we walk through. You can spot it by the yellowing near heat registers and radiators. It gets chalky in some spots, tacky in others. Slapping latex over old oil paint without a bonding primer is one of the most common mistakes we fix. The new coat peels off in sheets within a few months.

Bathrooms are tight. Single window, no exhaust fan. Moisture collects on the ceiling and walls after every shower, and the paint blisters and peels. It is the number one reason Fords homeowners call us.

Closer to New Brunswick Avenue, the pre-war homes still have horsehair plaster. Tough stuff when it is intact, but any prep work has to account for how differently plaster absorbs moisture compared to drywall. PVA primer is not optional on those surfaces.

Our Interior Painting Process

We do not show up and start rolling. Every job begins with a room-by-room walkthrough where we check for cracks, test the trim to figure out if it is oil or latex, and note anything that needs repair before paint goes on.

Prep is where the real work happens. Hairline cracks get filled with setting-type compound. Wallpaper seams that have telegraphed through old paint get skimmed flat. Oil-based trim gets scuff-sanded and hit with bonding primer. Skip this step and you get a paint job that looks great for six months, then falls apart. We follow a thorough residential interior painting process because there are no shortcuts that actually work.

After prep, two coats go on everything. Walls and ceilings get rolled. Trim gets brushed. We match products to the surface and the room, with moisture-resistant coatings for bathrooms and proper sealers for basement walls where the conditions call for it.

Services We Provide in Fords

Walls and ceilings in every room type and surface condition. Interior trim, baseboards, and door painting including crown molding. Closet interiors with walls, ceilings, and shelving. Bathroom painting with moisture-resistant products. Basement painting for concrete, finished, and unfinished spaces. Kitchen walls and ceilings. Drywall repair, patching, and priming. Wallpaper removal and wall prep. Specialty finishes like accent walls, popcorn ceiling removal, and high ceilings. We also help homeowners pick the right products for each surface and room.

A Recent Fords Project

A Cape Cod off Ford Avenue had been lived in since the mid-1950s and never fully repainted inside. The first floor was all original plaster. Solid, but cracked at every corner and around the window casings where the house had settled over the decades. Upstairs, the bedrooms had those sloped knee walls that follow the roofline, and the drywall joints along the slope had pulled apart just enough to show. Every piece of trim in the house was oil-based with at least three coats of paint that had gone yellow and chalky near the radiators.

We filled the plaster cracks with setting compound, let it cure, and primed the walls with PVA before anything else went on. The knee wall seams got retaped with mesh and skimmed smooth. All the trim was scuff-sanded, wiped down, and hit with bonding primer before two coats of waterborne alkyd. Walls and ceilings got two full coats throughout. Five days, start to finish.

Although I decided not to have my home painted by Red Trim, I’d like to thank Ernil for spending so much time at my house during the estimate. He was very patient and set the expectations very thoroughly. Knowing that I just bought the house, he was very generous and brought over amazing baked goods. Had an absolutely amazing experience working with Ernil and his team. To start with, he's one of the most detail oriented and honest vendors I have ever worked with. We had to travel for extended times during the weeks our house was being painted and Ernie went out of his way to update us, keep things on track and ensured our property was taken care of like his own. Now the paint bit! Fantastic job all around. The house looks like new. Would not consider hiring anyone else for my painting needs in the future. Highly recommend!

They worked on the exterior of my house and I already have my estimate scheduled for the interior. They explained the process of working on the outside of my house and were patient with all my questions. Kept me updated by sending me pictures. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does interior painting cost in Fords, NJ?+
Most rooms run between $400 and $1,000 depending on size, wall condition, and how much prep is involved. Plaster repairs and wallpaper removal push the price toward the higher end. We give free written estimates after an in-person walkthrough.
How long does an interior paint job take on a typical Fords home?+
Three to five days for a standard three-bedroom. More if there is plaster repair, wallpaper to strip, or oil-based trim that needs bonding primer. We lay out the full timeline during the estimate so there are no surprises.
Do you work in Lafayette Estates?+
Yes. We work across all of Fords, including Lafayette Estates, Ford Avenue, and the neighborhoods off King Georges Post Road.
Are you licensed and insured to work in Fords?+
Yes. Red Trim Painting Services LLC holds NJ Home Improvement Contractor License 13VH11727400. We are fully licensed and insured for residential interior painting in Woodbridge Township and throughout Middlesex County.
Do you repair drywall or plaster before painting?+
That is most of what we do on older Fords homes. Crack repair, skim coating, retaping separated joints, filling nail holes. If the walls are not right, the paint will not hold. We fix the surface first, every time.
Can you paint over old wallpaper in my Fords home?+
Technically yes. Practically, we do not recommend it. The seams show through the new paint within a year and moisture gets trapped underneath. Better to remove it, skim the walls, prime properly, and paint. Takes longer but the finish actually lasts.
What about lead paint on trim in older Fords homes?+
Any home built before 1978 could have lead paint buried under those layers. That means proper containment and prep following EPA RRP guidelines. We test suspect surfaces before touching them and follow every required protocol.
