Exterior Painting in Edison, NJ
If you are looking for an exterior painter in Edison, you probably already know your house needs work. Maybe the siding is chalking. Maybe the trim paint is cracking off in sheets. We see it every week here. Red Trim Painting works on homes across Edison Township, from the 1960s split-levels in North Edison to the colonials near Clara Barton to the ranches off Inman Avenue. Each neighborhood has different housing stock and different problems. A walkthrough in Menlo Park Terrace looks nothing like one in Bonhamtown. We know the difference because we have been painting in this town for years, not because we read about it online.
What We See on Edison Homes
Edison is big. Over 107,000 people live here, and the housing stock spans about five decades. Ranches and split-levels from the 1960s and 70s with aluminum siding. Vinyl-clad homes from the 80s and 90s. Wood clapboard colonials and brick-front Cape Cods closer to Pumptown and Clara Barton. Each material ages differently, and each one fails in its own way.
Aluminum siding is the one we deal with most. Decades of sun bake the factory finish until it chalks. Run your hand across a south-facing panel on a house off Oak Tree Road and your palm comes away white. That is the old coating disintegrating. Paint over it without treating the oxidation first and the new coat peels inside a year. We see this constantly.
Wood trim fails differently. Fascia boards under gutters, window frames, porch railings. On anything older than 25 years, count on peeling paint, grain cracking, and caulk that has pulled away from the joints. Central Jersey humidity does not help. Hot summers swell the wood. Winter freezes shrink it. That cycle breaks coatings down faster than people think.
Then there is mildew. Homes in lower spots near the Raritan River or in Bonhamtown get it on north-facing walls and anywhere shade sits all day. If you paint over mildew, it grows right through the new finish. It has to be killed and cleaned first.
Our Exterior Painting Process
We start every job by walking the entire house. Every wall, every corner, every soffit. We check what is failing, what is still sound, and where water has been getting in. You get a written estimate within 24 hours. Not a ballpark. A line-by-line breakdown of what we are going to do and what it costs.
Most of the labor on an exterior job is prep. For aluminum siding, that is an oxidation wash, spot sanding where needed, and bonding primer on every chalked panel. Wood gets scraped to a sound edge, sanded smooth, filled where it is cracked, and primed before any topcoat goes on. Prep is the part most contractors cut corners on. We do not. Our full guide on exterior painting preparation explains why it matters.
Then we paint. Acrylic latex on most siding. Solid-body stain on certain wood elements. What goes on depends on the material, the sun exposure, and what is already on the surface. Our exterior paint selection page breaks down how we choose products for each situation.

A Recent Edison Project
Raised ranch off Plainfield Avenue in North Edison. Built in the early 70s. Original aluminum siding, painted once about 15 years back. The front of the house faces south and the coating was gone. Chalked completely. The wood fascia under the front gutter had peeled to bare wood in three spots, and every window on that elevation had caulk pulling away from the frames.
We hit the aluminum with an oxidation wash and let it sit for 48 hours. Spot-primed every chalked panel with bonding primer. The fascia got scraped back to sound wood, sanded, hit with an oil-based exterior primer, and topcoated to match the new siding color. Re-caulked all window perimeters with elastomeric sealant. Two coats of acrylic latex on the siding. Four days, start to finish.
