Exterior Painting in East Brunswick, NJ
Most of the homes we paint in East Brunswick were built between the late 1950s and early 1980s. Drive through Colonial Oaks or Dunhams Corner and you will see block after block of colonials, split-levels, and raised ranches sitting on mature lots with full-grown trees shading the north and west sides. That shade keeps the house cool in summer, but it also traps moisture against siding and trim, which is where the paint problems start.
Red Trim Painting handles residential exterior painting across East Brunswick, from the older bi-levels near Rues Lane to the newer developments off Cranbury Road. We know the housing stock here because we have been working on it for over a decade. The aluminum siding on a 1965 colonial does not get the same treatment as the vinyl on a 2005 townhome, and we plan every job around what the house actually needs.
What We See on East Brunswick Homes
East Brunswick sits in Middlesex County with hot, humid summers and cold winters that cycle between freeze and thaw from November through March. That combination is hard on exterior surfaces.
On the 1960s and 1970s colonials and split-levels that make up a large part of the township, the most common issue is original aluminum siding that has chalked and oxidized. You can run your hand across a south-facing panel and come away with a white powdery residue. That oxidation means the old paint film has broken down, and if you topcoat over it without proper prep, the new paint will peel within two seasons.
Wood trim, fascia boards, and window frames on homes from this era take a beating. The humidity drives moisture into exposed grain, especially on north-facing elevations where the sun never fully dries the surface. We see splitting fascia, peeling trim paint, and failed caulk around windows on nearly every job in the Colonial Oaks and Summerhill neighborhoods.
Vinyl siding on newer homes holds up better to moisture, but it fades and chalks over 15 to 20 years. The homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s along Route 18 and near Heavenly Farms are hitting that point now.
Our Exterior Painting Process
Every job starts with an on-site assessment. We walk the full perimeter, check every elevation, and document what needs repair before any paint goes on. In East Brunswick, that usually means flagging oxidized aluminum panels, checking wood trim for moisture damage, and testing old caulk joints at window and door transitions.
Prep work is where most of the time goes. For aluminum siding, we use a chemical oxidation wash, let it dry completely, then spot-prime every affected panel with a high-adhesion bonding primer. For wood surfaces like trim, fascia, and soffits, we scrape loose paint to a sound edge, sand the surface, and prime any bare wood with an exterior primer rated for the substrate.
Once prep is locked in, we apply two coats of premium acrylic latex to all siding surfaces. Every coat gets proper dry time between applications. For a full overview of how we approach residential exteriors, see our residential exterior painting page.

A Recent East Brunswick Project
A 1972 split-level on a tree-lined street in Dunhams Corner had its original aluminum siding still intact but heavily chalked on every sun-exposed face. The south and west elevations were the worst. The wood fascia under the front gutterline had started separating at the grain from years of moisture cycling, and the caulk around every first-floor window had pulled away from the frames. Our crew hit the siding with an oxidation wash, gave it a full 48 hours to dry, then spot-primed every chalked panel with a bonding primer. The fascia got scraped back to solid wood, sanded, and primed with an exterior oil-based primer before topcoat. We re-caulked all window perimeters with elastomeric sealant, then laid down two full coats of acrylic latex across all siding and trim. Four and a half days start to finish for a home that had not been painted in over 20 years.
